Alameda County will pay $7 million and reform its deputies’ training programs after settling a lawsuit with the family of Maurice Monk, who died in the Santa Rita Jail in 2021 after allegedly languishing for days in his cell without any help from deputies.Details of the county’s settlement were announced Wednesday by the family of Monk, the 45-year-old Oakland man who died face-down on a mattress in his cell two years ago next to a puddle of urine and uneaten food on the floor. His death on Nov. 15, 2021, became a flashpoint among activists seeking improved conditions in the jail, where scores of people have died over the past decade from drug overdoses, suicides and killings.Along with the payout, Alameda County agreed to train current deputies and new hires to make “more quality checks” on inmates, said Adante Pointer, the lawyer for Monk’s daughter and son. For example, deputies must now document and personally check on inmates who refuse to eat, take medication...Man, 19, charged with ramming Pleasant Hill officer with BMW

SANTA CLARA — Brock Purdy played it cool Thursday, stiff-arming an obvious storyline of seeking vengeance in Sunday’s return to Philadelphia, where his elbow injury triggered the 49ers’ NFC Championship Game loss 10 months ago.“Am I going to go in there and get all sentimental, that I’ve come a long way? … Am I going into the game saying I want revenge? It’s not like that,” Purdy said.Instead, Purdy shifted the focus toward the bigger picture and how the 49ers (8-3) need a win over the Eagles (10-1) for playoff ramifications, especially when it comes to avoiding another game in Philly this postseason. His last visit went haywire only six snaps into the 49ers’ opening possession, when Purdy took a snap at midfield and had his right elbow struck by speedy Eagles pass rusher Haason Reddick.Reddick hasn’t reached out since then, nor did Purdy expect any well wishes in what has been arguably the NFL’s best comeback story this season.“I...You need up to $15,000 more just to live like you did in 2021, analysis finds

(NEXSTAR) – An economic analysis by a group of Congressional Republicans may have you feeling nostalgic for January 2021. There's not much to miss about that time – when many Americans were still out of a job or under stay-at-home orders because of the pandemic – but inflation hadn't yet exploded. Since then, the cost of just about everything, from groceries to gas to housing, has skyrocketed. An inflation tracker created by the members of Congress' Joint Economic Committee shows the impact of inflation on the average household in every state. (While the joint committee is chaired by a Democrat, the report and data was put out by the committees' Republican members.) The report uses January 2021 as a benchmark "because it was the last time inflation was within recent historical norms." Northern lights: More than 20 states have a chance at seeing the auroras Thursday Now, the report claims, most American household would need to spend an additional $10,000 or more just to afford...Guns, drugs, cash seized in San Jose mobile home park bust
