San Jose State head trainer’s touching of breasts “completely inappropriate,” expert says SAN JOSE – Touching the breasts and nipples of former San Jose State female athletes while treating shoulder injuries was “completely inappropriate” and had no legitimate medical purpose, an expert witness testified Monday in the trial of the school’s former head athletic trainer.Over and over, as a federal prosecutor recounted last week’s testimony of former female athletes, Dr. Cindy Chang said there wasn’t any medical justification for Scott Shaw to cup the buttocks of a soccer player for back pain, connect groin to groin with a softball player during a hamstring stretch or massage her groin area for a hematoma on her shin. Chang, the former chief medical officer for UC Berkeley’s athletic program, agreed with prosecutors that Shaw never asked the young women for permission to touch sensitive areas, never offered a chaperone to be present, failed to document the treatment and rarely explained why he was touching them that way, like he should have.“It alarms me for the student ath...

Shohei Ohtani trade market: SF Giants considered favorites if Angels move two-way star It’s hard to imagine a team and market more perfectly fit to embrace Shohei Ohtani than the San Francisco Giants, and as of Monday, the oddsmakers in Las Vegas agree. While the odds of the Los Angeles Angels trading their two-way superstar ahead of the Aug. 1 MLB trade deadline are shrinking — the Angels are just four games out of wild card position — the Giants have surpassed the other 29 teams as the club most likely to acquire him.According to DraftKings’ sportsbook, the Angels (-300) are expected to roster Ohtani on Aug. 2, but the Giants are next in line (+1,000, meaning a $100 bet would generate $1,000 in return). These odds have changed dramatically since last Monday, when the Giants were considered the fifth-most likely team to land Ohtani, behind the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners. Why the change? The Angels have won six of their last eight games and are about to start a three-game series with the lowly Detroit Tigers, whi...

Sheep herd replaces goats in BART fire mitigation efforts

Sheep herd replaces goats in BART fire mitigation efforts (BCN) -- The BART bestiary expanded by one species this year when a flock of sheep took over fire mitigation duties previously held by their goat cousins, transit agency officials announced Monday. The sheep, like the goats before them, are employed to devour dried vegetation on BART property in order to reduce the fuels that could feed wildfires. The goats first made their appearance two years ago and have been replaced by sheep because of the different types of plants the animals prefer -- sheep like to eat grasses and short roughage, while goats tend to go for taller woody plants, BART officials said. Police interrupt as Twitter logo taken down from SF headquarters "BART has been using goats for a while now, meaning there's more fine grasses and less brush now," said Mike Canaday, owner of Living Systems Land Management, the Fresno County company that provides the herds. The four-legged fire suppressors are considered more beneficial than human crews because they're...

Sharks may be on your TV this week, but dolphins are in a bay or river nearby Sharks may be dominating your TV with Discovery’s “Shark Week,” but that dorsal fin sighting on the Chesapeake Bay likely belongs to another marine animal.Of course, you may see some sharks in the Chesapeake or surrounding rivers; but if you spot a fin, it’s more likely to be a curious bottlenose dolphin.“In the past couple of years, we’ve noticed that dolphins are traveling very far up river, and that’s in a variety of different tributaries,” said Jamie Testa, with Chesapeake Dolphin Watch, a project of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science that has been around for five years and allows the public to record their dolphin sighting.Boaters and bay beach goers have recorded bottlenoses on the organization’s app from the Patuxent River, Rappahannock River, the Choptank River on the Eastern Shore, and the Chester River.“Generally, they’re here, foraging in the bay and the rivers. When the food is plentiful, they could just ...
