Herd of cows attacks jogger on Colorado trail A small herd of cattle attacked a jogger running on a Boulder County trail on Tuesday morning, prompting a closure of the trailhead.Another person on the trail saw the jogger trying to protect herself on the ground, surrounded by about 15 or 20 cattle, most of them mothers with their calves, and called 911.Boulder County Parks and Open Space rangers responded within approximately 15 minutes, according to Erin Hartnett, one of the rangers who responded. The jogger was taken to the hospital, and her condition is unknown.According to Hartnett, the cows were most likely trying to protect their calves and the jogger did nothing wrong.“This time of year they’re just very protective of their calves,” Hartnett said. The trailhead was reopened in the early afternoon, once the rancher who leases the field moved the herd to a fenced-in pasture south of the trail.Although the herd had been in the field for a couple of weeks without incident, people have reported aggressive cattle in the area bef...

Plastic surgeon charged in teen patient’s death points finger at nurse as jury trial begins A Colorado plastic surgeon charged with manslaughter in a teenage patient’s death should not be held criminally responsible because a nurse was actually at fault, the doctor’s attorneys argued at the start of his jury trial Tuesday.Dr. Geoffrey Kim, 54, is charged with manslaughter and negligent homicide in the death of 19-year-old patient Emmalyn Nguyen. The Brighton teenager went to Kim for a breast augmentation surgery in August 2019, when she was 18, but she suffered cardiac arrest after receiving anesthesia, fell into a coma and died 14 months later, in October 2020.Kim resuscitated Nguyen with CPR after her cardiac arrest, but then failed to call for emergency help for five hours even though she needed immediate care at a hospital, which was better equipped than Kim’s outpatient surgery center, prosecutors with the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office said during opening statements Tuesday.“Not only does he not call 911 himself, but (Dr. Kim) tells every other staff member...

ChatGPT’s responses to suicide, addiction, sexual assault crises raise questions in new study By Jacqueline Howard | CNNWhen asked serious public health questions related to abuse, suicide or other medical crises, the online chatbot tool ChatGPT provided critical resources – such as what 1-800 lifeline number to call for help – only about 22% of the time in a new study. The research, published Wednesday in the journal JAMA Network Open, suggests that public health agencies could help AI companies ensure that such resources are incorporated into how an artificial intelligence system like ChatGPT responds to health inquiries. For instance, with the right engineering and inputs, ChatGPT could recognize the signs and symptoms of addiction or depression within the questions someone asks it, prompting it to provide health resources in its interactions with that person. And regulators could help monitor that such responses offer accurate and reliable information and resources.“These resources exist. They’re underutilized already,” said John Ayers, an author of the study and a behavio...
